Anxiety at work

Who is not looking forward to going back to the workplace?  Ever dreaded a meeting? I know I have. I have had anxiety about events which really impacted upon my wellbeing. When I learned about NLP and how it the power to make change in my life and others I was so grateful that I had the tools and thinking to do something about it – so I did.

As the date comes closer and closer, it can manifest in a feeling in the pit of your stomach, a sense of ‘stewing’ which robs your energy. For some of us, anxiety affects what goes on outside of work, withdrawing into ourselves, lying awake at night.

Anxiety about a future event can be really challenging. Anxiety is a future based emotion, it requires a relationship with time in order to exist. Ask yourself, if ‘time’ was taken out of this situation, would you be feeling and reacting differently?

Here are two handy techniques to make a difference:

  • We can use time to help us, imagine yourself travelling forward in time to 15 mins after the event or meeting occurred, what are you doing and what are you feeling? Now, how do you feel inside and what is happening outside? Notice and enjoy that sensation.

  • When we find control inside of ourselves, we can change how we feel, so you can choose your reaction.
Think about how you want to be at the event or meeting (perhaps really calm, confident or thoughtful for example)
    Now, imagine being that way
What do you hear yourself saying?
What do you see yourself doing?
    What are you feeling?
    What are you thinking

Then as you may find you are smiling to yourself, you’ve got this!
