In the digital realm, everything is laid out for us, like pre-formatted answers to multiple-choice questions: yes or no, 1 or 2, a or b. Just select your preference, place it in your shopping basket, and proceed to checkout. Job done.
Thing is, this convenience comes with a hidden challenge. When it comes to making personal growth and change, there are no preformatted options. We’re faced with a ‘something else’ option that’s blank, waiting to be filled in by us. This can be daunting and challenging, especially when we’re so accustomed to the ease and predictability of the digital world. Perhaps that’s why change can be so emotional.
Is there another way?
Let’s think about the analogue world which operates on a scale. Remember the old TV controls? We tuned into the signal to get the clearest picture by turning a dial. We adjusted other knobs to enhance the picture, fine-tuning the brightness, volume, and colour intensity to our liking. With analogue, we widen our experience by making adjustments, opening ourselves up to both the highs and the lows of life. The lows can seem more pronounced compared to the highs, they also make the highs all the more meaningful.
